Looking for Gold, God, and Freedom

In 1607 a group of English settlers came to the new land.  They came in search of gold, and they did little else but search for instant wealth.  These early fortune seekers founded the colony of James Town, and their greed caused them much suffering.  It took almost 10 years for the colony to become firmly established.

In 1620 another group of settlers came to the new world.  They came from Holland in search of religious freedom, and founded the colony of Plymouth.  Their beliefs had already caused them torment and affliction, and the first few years in the new world were filled with more hardships and suffering, but they were strong in their beliefs and they were thankful for each little success.  They celebrated the first Thanksgiving only one year after their arrival; they did not complain about their circumstances, but chose to celebrate and give thanks for the things they had and the things they had accomplished.

These two colonies represent the values on which our country was founded: greed and religious freedom.  It seems that hundreds of years later we are still struggling with these same values.  As citizens of this free country we have the right and the duty to be involved in the decisions that affect our freedoms.  We must support those who strive to protect our freedoms and values and be very careful of those who promise prosperity – particularly those who do not promote opportunity but promise an equal share and prosperity to all.

Plato made this observation about government over 2000 years ago, yet it is still very true today, “The punishment which the wise suffer, who refuse to take part in the government, is to live under the government of worse men.”

Plato also said, “Excess generally causes reaction, and produces a change in the opposite direction, whether it be in the seasons, or in individuals, or in governments”.
