Beautiful Things

Recently a friend sent me a beautiful song from i-tunes by Laura Story.  The song is called Blessings and I have listened to it repeatedly; it has encouraged me through some difficult days and has become a treasure to my heart.

For the past several months I have been working on a book about the life of my handicapped son and how the Lord used his life to powerfully impact my own.  As I dig through twenty years of memories, I have been amazed to recall certain books, movies, and songs embedded within those memories.  Like bookmarks in my life, they have left an unforgettable imprint upon my memory.

Good movies and good books have unforgettable characters, characters that stir something within ourselves that give us a connection not only to the character in the story but also to our own story. They contain beautiful passages of literature while they tell stories of friendship, courage, loyalty, or integrity that move and inspire us. Good stories expand us and encourage us to choose goodness, to be courageous, they move us toward loyalty and love, and they imprint our lives.

While good music has an unforgettable message or melody that lifts us beyond ourselves for a moment or washes over us like a cleansing wave and yet forever connects us to that particular instant or season in our own lives.  Although we may find that sometimes beautiful music can leave us with a sense of longing, we usually discover that whether it is the message or the melody, there is something imbedded within the music that brings order out of the chaos of our thoughts. It calms and reassures us that there is order and rhythm to life. That reassurance restores peace and gives us hope; it strengthens us.

I think that these things – these forms of art as we might call them – all bear the signature of God on them; that there is nothing good composed or written or preformed by man that does not reflect the image and nature of God.  Of course, art can also reflect other images, but good art, moving compositions and literature, composed and written by men and women of God whose hearts long to serve Him, those things that move us beyond ourselves and leave markers in our lives, those are the things that must surely be divinely inspired. These beautiful things become a part of the tapestry of our life.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8
